A hound dog is a type of dogs that is specialized in assisting his master in prey hunting. A hound is not to be confused with a gun dog. While the latter is specialized in looking for a prey that was shot down and bringing it back, a hound dog is a seeker and does actually run after/chase and catch the prey.
Hound dogs can be further classified into different sub types.
There are some that hunt a prey by following its scent. These have a very advanced smelling system but they lack the speed.
Another type of hound dogs relies on carefully watching the running prey and actually running after it so that it doesn't lose its sight. These dogs possess a very high speed and are one of the most aggressive hound dogs around.
Some other hound dogs combine more than one sense in order to track and kill the prey. They may at a given time use any combination of two or more of these senses: sight, hearing and smell.
There are many breeds for hound dogs, and we're going to mention a few popular ones.
The deerhound is native to Scotland in the United Kingdom. It is specialized in hunting the red deer. Deerhounds are rather big in size, but they are one of the most calm-tempered hound breeds around. They like to practice and run in the fields, and they require monotonous training in order to stay in shape for the hunting. They rely on sight when performing their job.
Foxhounds are yet another breed. They are specialized in hunting for foxes. Unlike other hounds, they like to perform their job while in a group. One can see this breed on many animal TV shows, running in groups of a dozen or less, looking almost identical. This breed relies on scent in tracking its prey, and it can be further sub classified into American and English foxhounds.
The greyhound on the other side is popular mostly for its very high speed. It is often used in racing games. They are a rather calm breed and friendly to their owners (although exceptions are not unheard of). They get along very well with other dogs, but they are not to be kept near what they may consider as a prey, because of their powerful hunting instincts. Greyhounds do not require a lot of daily exercise, unlike other hound breeds.
Other types of hounds are: Beagle Puppies, bloodhound, polish hound, whippet and afghan hound. Checkout some of those Dogs For Sale here.
